The Sunday Scaries Aren't Just Stress: A Somatic Guide to Decompressing After a High-Stakes Week
You’ve finished your last email of the week. You’ve closed your laptop. You have officially "clocked out."
Yet, your shoulders are still hiked toward your ears, your jaw is clenched, and your mind is frantically cycling through an open-loop project from Tuesday.
If this sounds familiar, you aren’t just "stressed." You are stuck in a physiological loop.
For high-performing professionals, the transition from "Doing" to "Being" is rarely a simple switch. It is a biological hurdle.
When your week is defined by high-stakes decisions, constant problem-solving, and a need for extreme focus, your nervous system essentially "borrows" energy from your future self to keep you performing.
By the time Sunday arrives, you aren’t actually resting—you are merely waiting for the next "Doing" cycle to begin.
The Biology of the "Sunday Scaries"
The reason you struggle to decompress isn’t a lack of willpower; it’s neurobiology.
When you are in "high-performance mode" for forty-plus hours a week, you are consistently activating your sympathetic nervous system—the "fight or flight" branch.
Your body releases cortisol and adrenaline to keep you alert, energized, and ready to tackle challenges.
Chronic activation of this system, especially for professionals who rarely allow for a true "reset," leads to what researchers call a cumulative physiological burden.
As chronic stress persists, our biological stress response systems can become dysregulated, impacting everything from immune function to cognitive clarity.
Basically, your body has become habituated to a high-octane state.
It doesn't "know" you're in your living room in your sweatpants; it only knows the chemistry of stress that you’ve been feeding it all week.
This is why "just relaxing" doesn't work. You can’t tell a nervous system to calm down; you have to show it that it is safe to do so.
The "Doing" vs. "Being" Divide
In my work as a Somatic informed registered associate marriage and family therapist, I often see clients who treat their leisure time like another project.
They try to "optimize" their relaxation with structured hobby lists or rigid self-care routines.
While these things are well-intentioned, they keep you in a "Doing" headspace.
"Being," in contrast, is the ability to inhabit the present moment without needing to achieve a goal.
It is the state of ventral vagal activation—a part of the autonomic nervous system that allows for social engagement, play, and true restoration.
When we are stuck in a high-stress "Doing" cycle, we often lose access to this ventral state, making it physically difficult to experience genuine peace.
Moving from Top-Down to Bottom-Up
Traditional talk therapy often relies on "top-down" processing—using your thoughts and logic to talk yourself out of stress.
While reframing your thoughts is a valuable skill, it often fails when you are in the throes of a high-stress week because the stress is happening in your body.
To truly decompress, you need a "bottom-up" approach.
This means using your body to send signals of safety directly to your brainstem, bypassing the frantic, overthinking mind.
Here are three somatic practices to help bridge the gap between "Doing" and "Being":
1. The Physiological Sigh
When you notice that end-of-week tension (the jaw clenching, the shallow breathing), use the physiological sigh.
It is the fastest way to offload carbon dioxide and signal to your nervous system that you are safe.
How: Inhale deeply through your nose, then take a second, shorter inhale on top of it to fully inflate the lungs. Then, perform a long, slow, extended exhale through your mouth.
Why: That long, extended exhale stimulates the vagus nerve, which acts as the body's natural brake pedal for the stress response.
2. Orienting to the Environment
When your mind is racing, you are likely disassociated from your physical space.
Orienting is a practice of reconnecting with your immediate surroundings.
How: Slowly turn your head and neck, scanning your room. Let your eyes land on objects of different colors, shapes, and textures. Actually name them in your head: "I see a green lamp. I see a blue book."
Why: This signals to your brain that you are no longer in the "high-stakes" environment of your office or digital life, effectively bringing your nervous system into the present moment.
3. Titrated Transitioning
If you go straight from a high-stakes meeting to "doing nothing," your system will likely protest. You need a buffer.
How: Create a "transitional ritual" that involves sensory input. Change your clothes immediately upon getting home.
Use a distinct scent (like a candle or essential oil) that your brain only associates with "rest."
Wash your hands and face with cool water to signal a shift in temperature.
Why: Rituals provide the predictability our nervous systems crave. By consistently pairing these actions with the end of the workday, you build a neural pathway that recognizes "rest is coming."
The Bottom Line
Transitioning from "Doing" to "Being" is a skill, not a personality trait.
It requires moving away from the need to "optimize" your rest and toward the willingness to simply exist within your own skin.
If you find that your "Sunday Scaries" are becoming a constant companion rather than an occasional annoyance, it might be time to address the way your body holds stress.
